Yves Trevalec, a television producer from Luxembourg with the City TV Network was the successful bidder for lunch with Paul Mason and me. Mason is the executive producer of “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.” For the benefit of trapped animals in the Fukushima exclusion zone, Paul and I donated the event. Also in attendance was Chris DeRose, director of the animal rescue Last Chance for Animals in Los Angeles.
Trevalec brought a guest, Pierre Biver, a producer with Hollywood Star Footage based in Los Angeles. The popular Cafe Med on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood was the meeting place for this lively lunch.
Avid animal supporters, Yves and Pierre are developing a screenplay based on a wealthy Palm Beach couple who meet a homeless man. The story centers on the meaning of true friendship and devotion through their relationship with their dogs.
Chris DeRose is the founder and president of Last Chance for Animals, author and former actor. DeRose has been arrested 11 times and jailed 4 times for opposing animal cruelty, including his participation in a break-in at the UCLA Brain Research Institute in 1988. After his arrest, DeRose was fired from General Hospital.
At lunch, DeRose shared his colorful stories and everyone left with a copy of “In Your Face: From Actor to Animal Activist.“- his first-hand account that delves into the dark forbidden world of animal research and pet theft.
He also shared his HBO Emmy nominated documentary “Dealing Dogs.” Desperate to close down one of the most notorious dog dealers to research labs, DeRose placed one of his undercover agents for six months inside C.C. Baird’s Arkansas kennel to videotape the hideous crimes being committed against the dogs.
DeRose has never had a dog or a cat. His fight for the rights of animals is about justice and fighting for those that can’t speak for themselves. The animal lover grew up without a father and was put into an orphanage three separate times by his mother, for months at a time during the ages of five to eight, when his mother fell ill. All three times he never knew if she would be back for him. When DeRose was in acting school in Hollywood in the late 70’s, a mutt dog walked in off the street and sat right at his feet. This dog changed his life.
One of the most outspoken and passionate defenders of animal rights around. You’ve got to read his fascinating and inspiring stories!
It was a delightful afternoon with these avid animal lovers. Together, we have one common goal: to speak up for animals who can’t speak for themselves.
