You’re probably curious, “What is The Hachi Spirit, Vicki?”
I’m glad you asked!
Hachi was my most loyal friend and companion. He also happened to be my beloved dog. His life impacted me, so I developed a film inspired by him to share his spirit with the world.
The film Hachi: A Dog’s Tale was shaped by two profound inspirations: the historical story of Hachiko, Japan’s fabled and “most loyal dog,” and the real-life bond between me and my special canine companion Hachi.
When I was in Tokyo for the first time and locked eyes with the famed statue of Hachiko, the sense of calm he radiated stopped me in my tracks. His presence inspired deep reflection, and
At that moment, I wanted more than to gaze at Hachi –
I desired to BE like Hachi.
Right after, a real-life Hachi trotted into my life as a
loyal companion and beacon of calm, pure love.
Years later, divorced and alone for the first time in years, with all of the freedom and “stuff” one could wish for. . .
It was Hachi who showed me the inner peace at the heart of a truly meaningful life.

And what I found was that my dream life wasn’t actually out there waiting for me to discover it –
I had to create it.
In time, embracing each moment with endless enthusiasm – just diving in! – took me places.
For instance, when we made “Hachi,” I was a first-time producer running on a dream and tons of drive, while my executive producer had seen it all in the industry (and, naturally, kept advising me not to get my hopes up).
But I did keep my hopes up!
And two years later, at the Tokyo premiere, we sat in a packed theater watching Richard Gere, star and my co-producer, being introduced to the audience.
As the room darkened, I turned to him and said, “Remember when I told you about this moment?”
That’s what a wild amount of passion and purpose can do.
